Out with the cast iron
Most tubs we pull out are not failing because of the tub. They are failing because water has been getting past the surround for years. Replacing the fixture without addressing the wall behind it just resets the clock on the same leak.
A Massachusetts bathtub replacement usually means removing a cast-iron tub that weighs upward of 300 pounds, checking the joists and subfloor underneath it, replacing the valve while the wall is open, and rebuilding the surround with a real waterproofing system rather than green board and hope.
We quote the tub, the surround, the valve and any framing repair as one number after seeing the room. If the subfloor is sound we say so. If it is not, you find out before demo day rather than during it.

What's included
Our Process
No mystery. No surprise delays. Here's the exact sequence.
We look at the existing tub, the access, the valve and what the floor feels like underfoot. Firm itemized quote follows.
Tub out, surround stripped to studs. Joists and subfloor checked. Any rot or deflection addressed now.
New tub set level and supported, drain and overflow tied in, new valve roughed at the right height.
Kerdi over the surround, tile dry-fit then set, profiles at edges, grout and seal. Final leak test.
Materials We Trust
We only install systems we can stand behind for twenty years. No brand bait-and-switch mid-job.

Alcove soaking tubs
Deeper than a standard tub at the same footprint. The usual pick when the alcove is staying put.
Cast iron vs acrylic
Cast iron holds heat and lasts decades but needs solid framing. Acrylic is lighter and easier on an upper floor.
Schluter Kerdi-Board surround
Waterproofing and substrate in one panel. Tolerates the out-of-plumb framing common in older Massachusetts homes.
Pressure-balance valves
Prevents scald when another fixture runs. Standard on every replacement we do.
Worth knowing first
A full cast-iron tub on a second floor is a real load. We check joist span and condition before specifying one.
If this is your only tub and you may sell within a few years, replacing rather than converting is usually the right call.
While the wall is open, moving the valve and adding a shower rough costs almost nothing. Doing it later costs a wall.
Tub drains are smaller than shower drains. If you later convert to a shower, that line needs upsizing.

What homeowners say
Cast iron out, new soaking tub in, and they found a soft subfloor under it that nobody else had mentioned. Fixed it before setting the new one.

Melrose, MA · Bathtub Replacement
Second-floor bath in a 1920s two-family. They checked the joists before recommending acrylic over cast iron. Straight answer, no upsell.

Tub and full tiled surround. The waterproofing behind it is the part I cannot see and the part I actually paid for.

Questions
Two to three weeks for a tub and tiled surround, including cure time before the first shower. A straight swap with no tile work can be shorter.
If the tub goes back in the same place with the same drain, often not. If the drain moves, the valve is replaced or any framing changes, Massachusetts requires a plumbing permit and inspection. We file it.
Rarely, and we will tell you honestly. Pulling a tub almost always damages the bottom courses, and matching decades-old tile is usually impossible.
We break it down in the room under control, wrap it and haul it off. Serviceable vintage tubs sometimes go to architectural salvage.
Yes — see our tub-to-shower conversion page. We will walk you through which makes more sense for your house and your plans.
